Having a family can be beautiful and joyous, but it can also be very taxing on the planet when you look at the resources you use each day/week/month. Only you know whether your family is being kind enough to the planet enough, or whether you need to make a little more effort. Below, we’ll talk about what you can do to reduce your impact on the planet, and potentially save money in the process. Enjoy!
Grow Your Own Vegetables
Growing your own vegetables can be a fun activity for you and the kids. You’ll save money on vegetables at the supermarket, and you won’t have to think about things like how they were grown and imported, because you’ll know exactly where they came from!
Having your own vegetable patch can teach your kids valuable lessons about food, nutrition, and gardening and give them a great hobby for life.
Conserve Energy At Home
Conserving energy at home is something your whole family really needs to be on board with. You can’t be the only one trying to save electricity and water, or you’ll crack up and won’t see results! Make sure you have some guidelines and house rules that everybody can follow. Below are some examples of things that can help:
- Switch something off if you are no longer using it
- Don’t have all of the lights on in the house at once, only the ones you need
- Take quick showers rather than baths
- Turn the water off when shaving and brushing teeth
The above are just a few examples of what your family can do to be kinder to the planet and reduce your impact.
Be Mindful Of What You Buy
How kind you are to the planet also has a lot to do with what you buy. Many people don’t realize this, but indulging in fast fashion can be very detrimental to the planet. The mass production of these items and the fact that they are nearly always thrown away after little use and end up on landfills makes them terrible purchases that could leave the planet in ruin. Make sure you’re more mindful of what you’re purchasing when it comes to clothes, for instance; modal fibers are twice as soft as cotton and better for the planet. Then you should know about things like palm oil, that contributes to deforestation and the death of many beautiful animals in the forest. Always check the labels to ensure you’re not contributing.
It’s all too easy to bury your head in the sand, pretend it’s not happening, and go ahead with your life as you always have. However, by making just a few small changes, you could have a positive impact, save money, and barely notice that things have changed at all. Many people choose to ignore what’s going on with the attitude of it not being their problem, but if it’s not yours, it’ll be your kids, their kids…and so on. If you care about your family, animals, and the planet at all, be kinder to the planet today!
