Maintaining Healthy Crops This Summer

This post is contributed.

If you own a farm or you are looking to grow your own fruit and vegetables throughout the summer; it is important for you to be able to keep your tips healthy all year long. There are many things we can affect the way a drip grows and you need to work hard to make sure that yours stay strong and healthy for the seasons ahead. Today we are going to talk about things we can do to keep or crops healthy this year.

Let animals graze

One of the tricks of the trade when it comes to keeping your crops healthy and happy for the years to come is to let your animals graze on the field the season before you plan to plant your crop. The reason why this can be helpful is because animals will keep the grass in check but also get rid of any weeds so when you come to sow your seeds you will have a fairly easy field to deal with.

Rotate often

As well as moving animals to the field before you plant crops, you will want to have 3 fields on the go at any one time with different things happening each year. One field should have crops, one should have animals and one should be left wild. The reason this is important is because you will be able to rotate the crops each year and the nutrients in the soil will never dip too low.

Clear water

It is important when you are looking after a healthy crop to make sure that the soil doesn’t become too clogged up with water all the time. When you are trying to make sure that the crops are happy and that the roots don’t rot down too much during the year, you will want to use a pump such as the Berkeley b2zrm to move water away and let it drain off. This can be a great help and it can make all the difference when you are trying to grow a strong crop which stays healthy.

Keep pests away

Pests can be anything from slugs to snails to little bugs, and different pests have a taste for different crops. One handy way to keep slugs away from a crop without hurting them is to place a border of copper wire around the crop because this deters them from passing. It is a small thing you can do but something which can be super effective.

Maximise sunlight

Sunlight is always a big factor when it comes to keeping plants happy and the more sunlight you have the more likely your plants are to grow big and strong. If you are looking for a great way to bring sunlight to the field you should choose a field which is south facing. A south facing field will make all the difference to the crop and how well it will grow. You’ll end up with huge crops of fruit and vegetables in no time and it can be a really big help if you are new to farming this year.
